Energy Industry Business Function Model

A joint initiative between the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and the wider industry, the Energy Industry Business Function Model is being developed to Support the energy industry by developing and maintaining a framework for targeted long-term systems investment.

The model will describe energy industry business functions and their interactions and will provide a foundation for the discovery of information needs and opportunities. The expected benefits of such a model include:

  • Operational - Reduced time, effort and operational costs by using standard terminology and a library of reusable process definitions
  • Integration - Reduced time and costs of integration through consistent and compatible solution designs for common components
  • Collaboration - Opportunities for internal efficiencies and improved outcomes through possible collaboration
  • New strategic initiatives - A foundation to embark upon new strategic initiatives as major and aggressive changes are being driven by rapid technology change.

Guiding Principles

The development of the model is a collaborative process with input encouraged and gathered from all parts of the industry and while the view of particular aspects of the model may vary, there is no single right answer in its design or incorporated elements.

Once in place, the foundation model will enable the generation of additional value by adding new elements such as data (see EICDM) and security.

The model has been developed in conjunction with industry experts, Management Consultants, and outputs from the workshops held in both Melbourne and Sydney in November 2010.

Based on various existing models in other industries, it incorporates elements demonstrated in the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), APQC for Electric and eTOM (Enhanced Telecom Operations Map) reference models.
